Important first-in-human report today for donor pancreatic islet beta-cell transplant to an individual w/Type 1 diabetes. With genome editing, there was no immune response induced or need for immunosuppression. Major implications for transplantation in general @nejm.org

Not a RCT (would be unethical) but this study with historical no-mask controls showed dramatic reduction in viral respiratory infections in patients receiving stem cell transplants after a FFP2 masking policy was introduced.

A trial transplanted donor insulin-producing cells, edited to avoid immune attack, into a patient’s arm muscle. No anti-rejection drugs were needed, and they worked for 12 weeks.

A new HIV cure case has just been reported. A patient in Oslo has achieved long-term HIV remission after a stem cell transplant from a sibling donor with a rare genetic mutation (CCR5Δ32/Δ32).
