if you agree having a nearby grocery store is an essential amenity, state intervention (either heavy handed regulation or direct provision) are the only ways to guarantee access to one in poor and especially in rural areas

Wheelchair access should not be considered “an amenity.”

Accessibility should be as standard as a fire detector or front door.

The “Homevoter” thesis that posits NIMBYism is motivated by people maximizing home values is mostly wrong imo.

The primary motivator is amenity hoarding. The vesting metaphor is apt. They believe that the zoning is an amenity they are paying for. It’s an extension of their perceived property rights
I was struck by this homeowner advocate's stance that buying a house in a single-family-home neighborhood means you should have a kind of "vesting" in that neighborhood remaining single-family — the same as a developer with zoning for their projects subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026...

Just a reminder that without large-scale immigration we’d be / will be dumber and poorer and have less social amenity.

Hope this helps.

This is what happens when "bike parking" is just a checkbox item for developers, not a real amenity.
Ah, just where I want to park my bike… up 9 stairs! 🙄

As global warming advances, shade will go from a preference to an amenity to a necessity
Anglosphere planners go to great lengths to prevent shadows. This is absurd to me, a moderately observant human who occasionally goes outside and sees that people like being in the shade.

In Paris, in London, in New York and in Montreal, bike shares have become more than an amenity. It has become a quiet engine of transformation.

The world needs more benches (and toilets, and bins! And general provision of visible public amenity as a principle.)
"Benches are where optimistic visions of civic life meet reality. To remove them, or to curate who gets to sit, is to abandon the work of defining a civic ideal and determining, together, how to live up to it."

NEW: Why benches are slowly disappearing from public spaces — and why we need them back:
The Disappearance of the Public Bench
Benches are microcosms of an expansive debate about who belongs in urban public spaces. When they are removed or made uninviting, we lose more than just a place to rest.
