The good people at Notebook asked me to write about the restored Fall of Otrar. Of course, I turned in an essay on the deep strangeness of past worlds: mubi.com/en/notebook/...

I was able to see explanations! Was glad to notice that the Bresson and Amirkulov are at least in someone else’s pipeline, but very sad to learn that Suzuki is in such poor shape. I think it may have been by first of his films seen!

The Fall of Otrar (1991, d. Amirkulov) Amazing movie about Genghis Khan’s attempt to take Otrar, a once prominent province, only it is the story of a scout who knows the essentials of the plan, because he is from Otrar and knows his people.
