🏺 for the #archaeology and #anthropology peeps
Thank you / diolch to all my followers - there seems to be 10k of you 🥰🥳

For #StandingStoneSunday here's a special Toby the Trowel cartoon I drew at the age of 23 🧐

I'd phrase a lot of it differently nowadays but it's an historical item - pre internet fact-checking days 😮

❤️ Enjoy folks 🍻

🏺🗃️ Tell me again why history & archaeology & anthropology don't matter
"What is certain, and felt instinctively by almost everybody, is that things cannot go on in their present way" – The Times, May 1975

“It is difficult to imagine a previous period when such an all-pervasive hopelessness was exhibited at all levels of British life” – Professor Stephen Haseler, 1975

Where wine and anthropology meet...no, I'm not talking about conferences' wine reception! 🍷🍇🏺 #anthropology #ethnography #wine
Batumi, Georgia where winemaking traditions go back 8,000 years.

Per UNESCO, Georgia is where wine was invented dating back 6,000 B.C. The Qvevri wine-making technique is a cherished Georgian tradition, predominantly in villages with unique grape varieties.

Great to see that *finally* genetics and medical research are slowly starting to understand that self-reported race or ethnicity are basically biologically meaningless. As anthropology has been saying for decades. 🏺🧪
'the study drives home the important differences between race and genetic ancestry. “The clear message here is that these are two distinct constructs, they mean different things, and they should not be used interchangeably,” said Luisa Borrell, a social epidemiologist at...CUNY'. 1/2
Massive NIH study challenges use of race as a proxy for genetic ancestry in research
A large government study shows that Americans’ self-reported race is a poor proxy for their genetic ancestry.

#DataViz on #DNA methylation and ageing patterns in native Tibetans! 🧬🧪 #science 🏺 #anthropology #biology
Ageing speeds up at high altitudes, unless you’re native Tibetan. Their DNA methylation patterns adapt immune function and oxygen use to extreme conditions. A beautiful example of epigenetic resilience.

This is actually quite good. Mix of archaeology & anthropology. 🏺🧪🦴☠️🪰
I might use this in teaching to get my students thinking...
This is interesting. You get assigned to being born at a random place and time in history, to see what a typical person's life might have been like then.

Unfortunately I was born in 1403 in the valley of Mexico and died at age 4 from dysentery.
