Also, I was one of those kids on prescription drugs. When I was 12 (13?) I had a seizure and nearly pitched myself into a fire. It turns out I have epilepsy. Luckily there was an anticonvulsant that worked, and it's completely controlled.

Gabapentin is not an opioid. It is an anticonvulsant medication for neuropathic pain (neuropathy, fibromyalgia) in addition to neuro conditions like epilepsy. It may be overprescribed but it has a demonstrated utility.
