I have taught a module on the sociology of the apocalypse for several years now, even wrote a book on it. I always found the apocalypticists scarier than the apocalypse itself. This is an... interesting development

Though I've near-fully deconstructed at this point, Biblical history is still a point of fascination for me. Get rid of the dogma, and it's genuinely interesting-- the religious, cultural and political aspects of that era-- the rise of apocalypticists, political movements, etc.

These AI apocalypticists are worried about some dark fever dream of the future while the world is falling apart around us right now, and the usage of GenAI is actively contributing to that collapse.
Schmidt sketches a literally apocalyptic vision of what happens if the US loses the AI race to China. Says US will face a war with a superpower that uses AI to power unstoppable cyberattacks, biological attacks, and swarms of intelligent drones that will overwhelm us.

Probably not. It’s wild to me - that the air force is full of RW apocalypticists and conspiratorial freaks is common knowledge in research and some journalist circles. Nobody ever writes about the evangelicalization of the AF. Jeff’s piece is 17 years old.

It’s anecdotal but it seems like a lot of true believers are still in denial that he genuinely doesn’t care and thinks he’ll fix this when he learns and honestly how do you even speak to that viewpoint? It’s like apocalypticists whose judgment day prediction comes and goes but they won’t reflect why

all of that plus the whole theme of Trump II being about maximal vengeance, permanent destruction, the Miller race war apocalypticists and the Project 2025 medievalists all urging that this time all engines ahead until they burn out because Trump 1 didn't bring them the dystopia they wanted

I think it's more that expanding west would have made the British Empire totally unmanageable and it might have collapsed sooner so it made sense to bar the colonists from expanding, but the settlers were apocalypticists on top of being massive racists.
