#HillfortsWednesday #Celtic: Excavations at Tre'r Ceiri have produced finds mainly of Roman pottery, showing that they traded with the Romans. During the final period of occupation the fort may have been used as a refuge, not from the Romans but from Irish raiders.

Dr Jeffrey Davies and I published the last 'state of the nation' map on the known Roman villas in Wales in 2018 in the @cambriansarch.bsky.social journal Archaeologia Cambrensis

Still more work to do to fill in those gaps!

A team from PCA Newark have recently rediscovered a hidden well within the gatehouse at Newark Castle.

The well was first recorded in Archaeologia in 1782, where it was described as being 'still open'.

Always slightly surreal to hold the printed editions of Archaeologia Aeliana after working on it for a year. AA 2025 is another very full issue, with everything from prehistory to post-medieval history and archaeology. Onwards to AA2026!

Looking for a new time-keeping piece? How about this pocket-dial, made in 1593 for Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. The following description of it can be found in Archaeologia, Volume 40 (1866): 343-60.

Clutching an iron knife for self-defense, he likely climbed inside during an attack by Germanic tribes or Huns, unaware that ashes were already smoldering at the bottom. He probably suffocated from smoke inhalation without ever trying to escape.

It's #FindsFriday! Jack & Riley spotted this medieval cooking pot sherd from KARU's 1979 excavations at Butts Field, New Romney. In shell-tempered ware, it dates to c.1200–1260 CE and matches a vessel published in Archaeologia Cantiana 87 (1972), no.45. #Archives
