OpenAI's "Learning Lab is being positioned as an ongoing research ecosystem rather than a single research project."

What this means? OpenAI is trying to make ChatGPT a global focus of educational research as well as a core pedagogic tool.

Incisive and illuminating assessment that nails how I am seeing genAI cheerleading on my campus. Edtech left us in the lurch, but maybe *this* tech….
A random aside about what and why I think so many people in formal orgs are doing this:

1. Remember the neologism “intrapreneur”? God awful word but its politics were even uglier. It tried to brand the externalization of risk from state/firm to workers as SEXY.
(1) is really important.

I keep seeing people saying to use GenAI for brainstorming, overviews of new topics, etc.... but that's incredibly dangerous given how often these tools are wrong.

I have seen several sides of this as a scientist, a former MIT student and a current parent of K-12 kids in public schools where computerized testing and assessment (pitched and sold by edtech companies to school districts) is IMO over the top.

When our TAs were on strike for months, professors at UCLA were encouraged to compensate by using AI tools for assessment and grading—in other words, we were told to use AI edtech to cross the picket line.
100%. When did my unit start getting institutional nudges to incorporate AI into our work? When they increased our teaching load and we protested that the new load (4/5) was unmanageable for the teaching of writing. It's not hard to figure out!

If you run digital strategy in schools, or implement edtech, I would very much recommend that you get consent from caregivers and students for any edtech that you use. Especially if it is a gen ai assessment tool.
Best thing is not to use gen ai tools.
But if you want to… get that consultation done

EdTech can make learning more accessible for Multilingual Learners and students with Special Education needs. It can enhance our planning, teaching, and assessment.

AND

Tech cannot replace good instruction from a trained teacher, and connections with other humans.
