Some automakers: people really don't want EVs

The same automakers: If Chinese EVs are sold in America, we're fucked.

They literally don’t believe in the free market principles they espouse. It’s just propaganda. The truth is they just want to be the only ones allowed to make all the money & they don’t want the consumer to have any choice.

Global automakers, 15 years ago: “yeah the joint-venture rules mean we’re basically teaching China’s automakers, but it will be fine.”

Global automakers now: “Dang.”
- VW cutting production capacity in China by another 500,000 vehicles & plans cost reductions of 20-30% by end 2027
- "Average return on investment for automakers here in China, ex-exports, is 1.5%. Hardly anyone is making money in this market anymore"

Reminding me of the 1970s when the OPEC crisis surged gas prices and US automakers lost out to Japanese auto makers who were making more fuel efficient, smaller cars.

US automakers make some bizarre decisions. Abandoning EVs just as the world is electrifying everything is typical.

Because Trump has killed the US auto industry.

The world is moving to EVs and the US automakers can't compete.

That's what this is.

so US automakers want a Trump bailout too

You don’t think people would buy $20,000 electric vehicles if they could? Or small electric trucks that none of the US automakers make?
November 2, 2026 at 8:10 PM
Maybe US automakers should not have shuttered their EV development and doubled-down on combustion engines just as electrification of everything is getting underway.

US automakers could try competing

If people didn't want to buy them, the automakers wouldn't be trying to permanently ban them from being sold.

How many times are US automakers going to do some dumb shit and the whine for protectionism? Ive seen this movie a couple times before.

If they just make the automakers stick to electric they will never have this problem again. Makes you think...

EVs in the US were gaining market share until the Trump administration took affirmative steps to limit the desirability of EVs.

The Big Three (and European and Japanese automakers selling in the US) lost enormous amounts of money as a result, and they're understandably gunshy about risking it again
Might be smarter if they just use their muscle to prevent policy changes that penalize EVs...

I don’t think the U.S. is a stable place to do business. The second you start to win, they'll pull the rug.

Also, the automakers wanting this to happen but refusing to address affordability concerns is insane
