RARE: White mandarin
Their snowy white plumage is caused by leucism genetic mutation that reduces pigment cells
Found in private aviaries, specialized exotic waterfowl farms and bird sanctuaries
Paired with a normal mandarin male (standard coloured)
All the chicks will be the normal colour

Mammals have mammaries, avians have aviaries. Simple.

Mbala, watching our farm get progressively taken over by cranes while he tries to assemble massive aviaries (where we could really use the other kind of crane).

Our newest outdoor aviaries are finished and are already housing their first patients!
Our first batch of wild turklets has graduated to this protected outdoor space and are immediately starting to forage for bugs and try out their wings. They grow so fast! 🪶

Brave boy!
Yolo the baby king vulture is very curious and has been enjoying exploring our ambassador building and aviaries. He's just started to fly, but using ramps is a lot of fun too. 🪶

We have a large span of new aviaries going up, so excited to have the much needed additional space for raptors and other birds!

After some really deep cold, a temporary warm up means our vultures can enjoy their outdoor aviaries again. Everyone is thrilled, except for new guy Misha, who is still really unsure about the great outdoors. Pretty soon he'll realize how amazing it is and be sun bathing with the best of them!

I have a friend who works in one of those big aviaries at the zoo. When they need to catch a specific ground bird, they go out and hide under a big sheet near the food bowls until the bird forgets there's a human under there.

The phrase "Hiding under the bird sheet" gets a lot of use in our house.

Red-crowned Crane. He had a friend in the area. I hate seeing flock animals alone in captivity, w/exception of cockatoos bc sometimes they’ll kill each other if housed together. They’re better to be placed in neighboring aviaries.

For all you good people who coughed up over 5K in the spring, for my half-marathon for Jean Thorpe Wildlife Rescue: Jean's aviaries now have full electrics, heating, lighting and CCTV throughout (plus a new freezer)!

So grateful for all the donations from so many lovely folk. THANK YOU! 😍 🙏 🦉 🦅

#Maryland “ to enter a Phase II bio-security protocol at all 7 of the state’s aviaries”

“This means restricting access to aviaries, covering enclosures/feeding and water areas, suspending off-site bird programs and aviary public tours and enhancing staff safety measures.”

Access to aviaries at Maryland State Parks restricted amid H5N1 concerns
A presumptive positive test of the H5N1 virus found in migrating snow geese in Delaware prompts Maryland State Parks to enter a Phase II bio-security protocol at all 7 of the state’s aviaries

Blizzards here mean a lot of climbing atop aviaries to keep snow load off of them, but it doesn't faze all of our residents, even some of our more inherently tropical ones.

Ducks Unlimited sends a promotional sticker of a…mandarin duck?

DU’s work has benefited a lot of waterfowl species but the mandarin duck (an Asiatic duck often kept in aviaries) isn’t one of them.

Conservation communications should be done by real people, with real natural history knowledge.

Fish are just like little birds, and aquariums are high density aviaries
