#backcross
[sees any gull in any plumage whatsoever] whoa got a real weirdo here. What a wacky one. Hybrid x hybrid backcross? We may never know.

🌱👶TIME FOR BABY PICTURES? Yup we have liftoff!🚀 My March 2024 cross of Schlumbergera russelliana × (S x. buckleyi 'Outono Brasil), was harvested a little more than a week ago, now over two dozen seedlings. This backcross of a hybrid to a species should produce some interesting results! Cactaceae

A likely backcross (F2) Golden-winged x Blue-winged Warbler!

Rhododendron ‘Little Maria’ = R. viriosum x (viriosum x gracilentum). I thought the buds might abort in the 100+ F heat last week, but nope.

Despite the backcross to R. viriosum, R. gracilentum is dominant for size (or lack thereof). #vireya 🌱🌴

This gorgeous orchid is the easily grown Brassocattleya Yellow Bird. This is the third flowering this year. It is a backcross that is ultimately 75% Brassavola nodosa and 25% Cattleya milleri. I love the vibrant yellow with spots, like ripe bananas. 🪴🌱

A plethora of Primulas at Bedford Purlieus NNR - a huge mixed population of Cowslips and Primroses, a scatter of hybrid False Oxlip, and then a couple of plants of a putative backross with Primrose-like growth form and small, deeper-yellow flowers...

looking this one up, it's a Triangle Kush backcross from Seed Junky which explains the rather nice flavors
when the weed is so chunky I can't even take a proper photo cuz my phone can't focus on the whole bud at once, that's what I like

A good week for the #wildflowerhour #cowslipchallenge- flowering well at Bedford Purlieus NNR, Barnack Hills and Holes NNR and in our wild garden...plus one at Barnack with some Primrose genes in its pedigree

Most of what I smoke is rosin because it’s hard to find good flower. Found a local guy with a sour diesel backcross he runs. I love my rosin, but smoking a doobie of some sour is the feeling that made me be a stoner. A doobie sour can always fix me 🙏

One thing I love about flower breeding is that it's almost purely driven by taste and style. I'd sooner select for a more beautiful bloom and then backcross for robustness than chase hardiness from the beginning. Sometimes style can come before substance. Sometimes.

4/By whole genome sequencing of 709 backcross recombinant plants we found that in three different hybrids, meiotic crossover rates were consistently higher in female meiosis than male meiosis.

"domestic cat" I'd bet $20 that is a Savannah cat/serval backcross, barely a domestic cat at all
