I saw a post earlier this year which read to the effect of "you can't be part of the community by turning up and spending your time in the dealers hall, you have to engage with the community" and the absolute privilege of that stance left me reeling.

What REALLY fucked with me is how much Barcon at WorldCon is important to people's careers.

One of the best parts of genre conventions - both film and literary - is the BarCon, when all the writers or filmmakers sit around drinking, comparing battlescars. Because we ALL have them. Being a creative is hard. It can be soul crushing. But surviving it makes you the creative that you are.

I always feel like I miss half the convention, because I CANNOT handle BarCon. I WILL have a meltdown, and that will hurt me more than any amount of cheery socializing would help.
