#ASNJASN: A kidney-protective immune cell? TREM2+ macrophages help limit diabetic kidney disease, with distinct resident and monocyte-derived populations playing unique roles. Loss of TREM2 impaired lipid clearance and worsened kidney injury. #BasicResearch #Nephrologyhttps://bit.ly/JASN1248//bit.ly/JASN1248" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link="bsky">bit.ly/JASN1248

Our kidneys have their own “body clock.” A #basicresearch study in #ASNKidney360 suggests that in ADPKD, that clock may be disrupted as cysts grow. Researchers hope these findings could lead to new ways to protect kidney function in the future. kidney.pub/KID1347

A potential protective pathway emerges in DKD. Kidney biopsy RNA-seq identified a core disease signature and found that higher FOXI1 and V-ATPase expression was associated with slower eGFR decline and delayed progression to kidney failure. #BasicResearch in #ASNKidney360 kidney.pub/KID1319

Why are some glomeruli more vulnerable than others? According to #basicresearch in #ASNJASN, Single-nucleus RNA-seq of 860K+ kidney nuclei identified juxtamedullary podocytes as hotspots of stress and senescence, showing location as key determinant of glomerular risk. kidney.pub/JASN1255

New #basicresearch in #ASNJASN suggests TSPO may drive CKD progression by disrupting mitochondrial metabolism. Blocking TSPO reduced kidney injury and fibrosis and improved cellular energy production in preclinical models, highlighting a potential new therapeutic target. kidney.pub/JASN1262

I also love where the story began as it started with curiosity about how a single-celled alga responds to light. That question helped lay the foundations for a tool now used across neuroscience, & underscores why basic research deserves sustained support

#Horizons is celebrating its 150th issue with a look back at highlights from 1988 onwards.
In addition: Despite being the cornerstone of all knowledge, #BasicResearch often finds itself on shaky ground, both politically and financially.
