I had the great fortune of taking a Bdote history tour with Carleton students and colleagues this morning. We visited Owamni Iyomni, Bdote, and Wichahapi with Ramona and Reuben Kitto Stately, members of the Santee Sioux Dakhóta and the Red Lake Nations, respectively, who were amazing teachers. 🗃️

That facility sits near the center of all things. Our Dakota creation at Bdote. My Mdewakantowan ancestors were imprisoned at Ft Snelling in 1862. Many were killed on forced march to the fort. Over the winter, disease took more before being exiled by train/steamboat to starve at Crow Creek in SoDak.

a few years back MN republicans tried to cut the minnesota historical society’s funding because it put up a sign saying “Historic Fort Snelling at Bdote,” the Dakota name for where the rivers join there. they made a big stink about “revisionist history” and eventually mhs folded. and now we’re here!
This is surreal. 4 Oglala Lakota men kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis have finally been located. One of them was released but the other 3 are being held at Fort Snelling, a former concentration camp used to imprison Native people incl. the Dakota 38 during Dakota Wars.
