With interesting reflections from @richardfoxbc.bsky.social “a good summer for adult butterflies is not the same as a good summer for butterfly populations”
A huge thank you to the 101,565 of you who took part in this year's #BigButterflyCount!
While many widespread butterfly species had a good summer, drought and record heat could impact next year’s populations.

Participants have been out surveying butterflies to contribute to Butterfly Conservation's annual #BigButterflyCount.
It’s a vital piece of work tracking population dynamics.

9 Gatekeepers, 3 Meadow Browns, 2 Common Blues, 1 Peacock, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Large White and 1 Small Skipper (Which they do not count.)
Gatekeepers used to be rare for us, and, though they have now become regular, this year is exceptional. No Speckled Woods is odd.

I did my first count yesterday... and it was SUCH fun. Gatekeepers, Meadow Browns and Silver Y moths so abundant I could barely keep up!

Tiny white dots on the underside of the hindwing mean you've spotted a Gatekeeper - there are none on Meadow Brown!
