Why are evil bioscientists always like "this horrible disgusting mutation is the ultimate evolution of humanity!" like don't they have any sense of aesthetics

I watched much of Ian Chapman's (Head of @ukri.org) appearance this morning at @ukparliament.parliament.uk Science, Innovation and Technology Committee..

A few points and new information that bioscientists may find interesting...

And let's not make the same mistake again with the bioscientists and computer whizzes.

Oh wait

This is so important for understanding why research in model organisms is so powerful.

Trained bioscientists find it easy to believe that many results relevant to cancer were discovered in yeast.

By laypeople, particularly if they are skeptical for other reasons, think we are stupid or nuts.

Those bioscientists "bring back" direwolves into existence just to give them the lamest names ever!!

They should have been named Pizza, barbell And kumquat!

Jurassic Park eat your heart out. Bioscientists looking to bring back the extinct Tasmanian tiger reconstructed 99.9% of its genome, based on RNA samples from a 110-year-old preserved head. https://buff.ly/4ffidnc

Scientists say they've made a breakthrough in efforts to bring back the extinct Tasmanian tiger
Colossal Biosciences says it's made a breakthrough toward the de-extinction of the thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger.

Instead of fake resurrecting Dire Wolves our venture capital backed bioscientists could be working on this problem. For the silk and the horror.

I'm afraid that's a technology thing, and I'm strictly a 'biology' guy

As I always say, "If it doesn't go splat, I don't deal with that" [A motto the International Association of Bioscientists has thus far refused to adopt, despite my many letters]

As a microbiologist, at least half of your life will be consumed by parafilm. I'm sure it's the same for other bioscientists too. No one tells you this until you've already committed to it.

This is where qualitative research, so scorned by many bioscientists, has so much to offer, when done properly!

Governments have invested millions, and bioscientists vast amounts of work, to develop rigorous containment protocols for hazardous biological research, such as virology. Even so, they don't always work, but they have generally held the line. The so-called "containment" protocols of AI labs seem

I vibe coded an entire supercomputer bioinformatics pipeline, using language I don’t know at all, requiring a combination of expertise I could not have recruited as a human. Some AI coding lessons which might be useful to bioscientists in a similar situation (= most of us :)):

Haha yes - I was at @flashficfestuk.bsky.social and @devaneemily.bsky.social said to write about something unusual on your doorstep 😆 My mind immediately leapt to this de-extinction craze the bioscientists are messing with...

In ENTIRELY UNRELATED news, bioscientists have Made A Note of who is funding AI and who is funding virologists, and we would like to have SEVERAL discussions about Priorities.
Breaking News: Scientists have used A.I. to create new viruses for the first time, raising hopes for medical advances while also raising the possibility that the technology could someday be used to invent dangerous pathogens.
This A.I. Just Created Viruses Not Found in Nature
Scientists trained artificial intelligence on libraries of DNA and then asked the model to create recipes for viral genomes. Sixteen of them were viable, yielding new viruses.

This captures the reason I went on strike in 2023. The lack of solidarity from bioscientists for the wider university community was shocking. I imagine it's because we remain *relatively* well funded.
struggling to budget both myself & a decent post-doc under the ukri grant caps (given the massive overheads unis charge) & wondering how others are managing. Then I see all the 0.4 fte for 15 months precarious post-docs being advertised & realise that’s the only way to do it. I hate it, thanks.

Cropped to exclude the name, because the poster obviously isn't bad, they're just resident of a whole system that's failing --

It drives me ABSOLUTELY FUCKING BONKERS that the most educated bioscientists on the planet are almost all still working with handheld pipettes.
