Blockstream pauses Liquid Network after attackers claiming to be whitehats take 4,000 BTC (~$320 million) An unauthorized withdrawal of 3,998.5 BTC (~$320 million) from the Liquid Network, a bitcoin sidechain, prompted a network halt. By disabling nodes that bridge between Liquid and the bitcoin mainchain, attackers are limited in their ability to cash out via bridge. Blockstream, the developers of Liquid Network, also said they had contacted exchanges to ask them to pause LBTC deposits and withdrawals, cutting off another avenue. The unauthorized transaction included a message reading "we are whitehats. contact us on chain", suggesting the possibility that the withdrawal was in fact well-intentioned security researchers aiming to "rescue" funds after discovering they were vulnerable and then return them to a secure wallet. However, as of the afternoon on September 6, Blockstream had only said that they were "working on contacting" the "purported white-hat hackers".

Samson Mow: Update: 3,400 BTC of the roughly 4,000 BTC withdrawn on September 6 has been returned to the @Liquid_BTC Federation wallet. The return followed confirmation from @Blockstream that the affected bridge nodes have been patched. Approximately 598 BTC remains outstanding, and Blockstream continues to engage with the white-hat hackers. The network remains paused while Blockstream and Federation members make additional fixes and security improvements, resolve the chain split, and prepare for a safe restart. Liquid wallets and services will continue to be affected during this time. Blockstream: To those responsible for the theft of bitcoin from the Liquid Network: ... Blockstream will not pay a ransom for the return of stolen funds. Taking assets without authorization and withholding their return is a crime, not responsible disclosure. It is not white-hat activity. It is theft. We have engaged in good faith in an effort to secure the return of stolen user funds and protect the broader Bitcoin community. That effort should not be mistaken for acceptance of the actions taken nor of the terms being demanded. We will not be a party to the precedent that open-source software developed for the good of the Bitcoin community should subject its developers to paying a ransom that far exceeds their economic participation. Bitcoin is hard money and can't be minted without costs, Bitcoin doesn't haircut users to pay a ransom.

"Sunday in NY I think is a no-go because of our commitments on the west coast, but Fri/Saturday on the Island are still possible," Hill told Epstein. "great.," the financier replied in typo-filled prose, "you will need to fly to st thomas. just let me know times. looking foward to it."
