We spoke with @authorsabb.bsky.social member @curiosityjones.bsky.social about her experience with #BookChallenges and bans including her title that was pulled for review in Duval County, FL, Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer.

K.Jones Answer: Unusual Chickens is a funny book about taking care of chickens that have super powers. It was pulled for review from Duval County Public Schools in Florida in 2022 in response to newly-passed legislation, along with the entire Essential Voices collection that had been purchased to help boost literacy. (Nearly 70% of the students in that district are of color.) There was no challenge from a parent or from the community. PPABB Question: What do you want publishing professionals to know about your experience? K. Jones Answer: This was one example of the enormous effect that legislation can have on what readers can access. Even the idea that books might fall under this legislation triggered a massive soft-ban. With that as our landscape, none of us can ignore potential legislation that could take away our freedom to read...I think it's helpful for authors and illustrators to be aware of soft censorship and how to identify it, and for the professionals they work with to be clear that soft-bans are a pattern of attack and not an isolated incident. PPABB Question: What do you wish readers in general knew about book bans? K. Jones Answer: It's really important to look for books and topics that you feel should be on the shelves, and if they're not there, to ask why. If they're popular and checked out to readers, great! If they're hidden in an office or in a section that's not appropriate for their audience, or if they've been stolen by someone with an agenda, that's a soft-ban. Don't let books just disappear.
