Analyzing data from >15,000 children, Rebecca Schwarzlose @washumedicine.bsky.social and team find that sensory over-responsivity is connected to autistic traits and to anxiety (in kids with/without autism) but is not directly related to ADHD. @jaacapjournals.bsky.social

Sensory overload in kids has distinct neurobiological roots
A study led by WashU Medicine researchers finds that sensory distress is directly related to both autism and anxiety, but not ADHD. The research also identified distinct patterns of brain connectivity...

I'm on the 2026-27 faculty job market!

My lab will study how prefrontal circuits build and coordinate the brain-wide networks behind lasting memories, and how psychedelics & related compounds reshape those networks and behavior.

Trumpy has ALZ/dementia and it is 100% related. He is losing 1 billion brain cells a day. His 'polite' filters are all being shut off and he will get worse and say worse stuff. Social norms disappear from Alzheimer's.

He will progressively get worse until it gets into the brain stem. Then he dies.

I’d be pretty pissed off if I was related to brain sucking aliens, buff humanoid geese, the Irish, and was missing an eye, and was, like, almost 200 years old, myself. Not sure about Samus, but, y’know.

People with HIV are living longer, bringing new health challenges.

amfAR-funded research into HIV and aging is exploring brain health and age-related conditions, with potential benefits beyond HIV.

Progress means living longer and better.

Love how few steps it takes my brain to leap from something innocuous like “remember pay phones” to “hey, remember this deeply painful memory that is tangentially related to pay phones that you can now turn over in your brain for the remainder of the work day”

Mouse study suggests new approach to preventing brain cell death from certain neurological diseases
Blocking immune cells’ path into brain limits neurodegeneration
In a mouse study, WashU Medicine researchers show that a drug injected into the body can reduce damage caused by a protein called tau, which accumulates in the brain in Alzheimer’s and related neurological diseases.

been seeing a lot of stuff related to the Control (video game) fandom, and it’s giving me the same slightly-unsettling-but-won’t-leave-my-brain feeling that House of Leaves did when I was reading it. Maybe I should play the games?

NF2 related schwannomatosis affects everyone differently. It’s a genetic condition that causes tumours to grow on nerves in the brain, inner ear, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves — and it can be truly life changing.

Anything related to safety has always been seen as "uncool." It's completely maddening. Sure, a helmet looks kinda dorky, but it can keep your brain from getting splattered all over the pavement, so it seems a pretty small price. Alas, peer pressure is way higher in adults than anyone admits.

I watched the 6th sense in 6th grade and it was like it flipped a fear switch in my brain. Lying awake at night imaging scary things, not even related ones necessarily. I slowly unspooked over the course of, like, months. And now I’ve only recently started watching horror movies

Related: walking door to door, with very few actual contacts, is ideal for coming up with new poems! :)

Also, invented a fun new cognitive self-assessment: when my brain stops being able to focus on the poem's next line, it's time for electrolytes, fast. O_o
