I think it comes to look very formulaic -- "remembers X, Y, Z as judged by their brainstates and this extractive definition of memory" -- but the overlaps are the problem and they are functionally impossible to systematically discover

which on the one hand, obviously it's good to make the effort, but on the other, it can be discouraging at times. That being said, the question of 'how does our brain work presently?' is also separate from anything about past brainstates, even if the latter can give extra context at times.
