The ‘Breast-Cancer Gene’ Needs a Rebrand
BRCA mutations can lead to cancer in the pancreas, prostate, and maybe more parts of the body.

BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are more common in younger individuals, and these mutations increase cancer risk by as much as 84%. Six percent of all breast cancer patients carry BRCA gene mutations, but in patients under 45, roughly 12% carry the gene. It is important to note that BRCA cancers are

My mother’s side of the family carries a BRCA mutation which has caused early and aggressive cancer. My mother was only 38 when they found it and she was given a 50% chance of survival.

I take this seriously.

this week 20 years ago, Nature published two seminal papers showing for the first time that BRCA-mutant cells were selectively sensitive to PARP inhibitors, paving the way for clinical trials and approval of PARP inhibitors for patients with BRCA-mutant ovarian and breast cancers, and beyond.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US.

Breast Cancer (BrCa) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women. About 83% of breast cancer diagnoses are among women aged 50 or older.

BrCa has the highest treatment cost of any cancer, making up 14% of costs ($29.8 B) in 2020.

I have been sliced open and mangled, injected with poisons that made me want to die, kicked into the hormonal body horror of menopause, and microwaved daily for 6 weeks in order to evict cancer.

THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER

Hospital has an increased risk of BRCA mutations.
Ah, ok. Well people are also mad at her for having her baby at a Jewish hospital with alleged “ties to Israel”.

This rampant antisemitism is fucking exhausting.

I joined a research program called All of Us that was sponsored by the NIH. Through that, they discovered I have BRCA 2. I have been getting testing and will be getting necessary surgeries because of that. The NIH literally saved my life.

Men, if you suspect there may be BRCA mutation in your family, you should consider getting tested because it can also lead to increased risk of prostate cancer.

I was tested and luckily it skipped me.

Like my dad, I carry the hereditary BRCA-2 mutation, which increases cancer risk. I’m doing IVF with genetic testing to screen out embryos that carry the BRCA-2 mutation so that my family’s long lineage of cancer ends with me.

Got my results back this morning for the BRCA 1 & BRCA 2 mutations ... and BOTH ARE NEGATIVE! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Doesn't mean I won't ever get cancer, and I still have a family history of cancer, but at least I'm not MORE likely to get these particular types of cancer.

Truly relieved.

And always #FuckCancer
Blood drawn for genetic testing to confirm whether I have the BRCA 2 gene mutation. Now I wait and hope for a negative result. *fingers crossed* #fuckcancer

Dad died from prostate cancer. 20 yrs later, my 2 sisters identified as BRCA carriers. What sucks is the very limited genetic testing offered to my older sister after cancer diagnosis *didn’t identify BRCA genes* - it wasn’t even looked for til my younger sister was diagnosed as being a carrier
