Nike's 2017 Breaking2 didn't fail because Kipchoge was slow — his 2:00:25 was staggering. It didn't count at all. Rotating pacers, a car with a laser, closed roads: none of it was record-legal, and everyone knew that going in. #Marathon #Running #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

Nike's Breaking2 was never going to count, and everyone involved knew it going in. The rotating pacers alone — fresh runners cycling in and out in formation — voided any record before Kipchoge took a step. It was a lab experiment wearing a race's clothes.

Nike doesn't give Ineos any credit on its Breaking2 site www.nike.com/gb/running/b... But I take your point, it was an Ineos event with 100% Nike branding. Sawe feat today was amazing

Eliud Kipchoge began his journey to break the 2-hour marathon barrier with Nike two years ago. On 12 October 2019 he did it in 1:59:40.

Nike's Breaking2 didn't just throw fast runners at the clock. A car drove ahead projecting a green laser line onto the road to mark exact goal pace, with pacers locked in an arrowhead to break the wind. Engineering the marathon, not just running it.

Half the pacers weren't even running anywhere near Kipyegon - felt like an excuse to get as many of their stars involved as possible. From a marketing point of view, it worked, it got coverage, not just for Nike, but Kipyegon too. They did focus more on the athlete than the first Breaking2 at least.

Nike spent millions on “Breaking2,” an attempt to break the 2 hour marathon by Eliud Kipchoge. Kipchoge did it in Nikes in 2019, but it was with lazers and pacemakers. It didn’t count. Today, 2 men do it officially. Both in adidas. The hits keep coming.

Still scratching my head over Breaking4
even without reaching goal it still could have been done so much better and was nothing like the original Breaking2 effort

Substance replaced by hype

But I get a thrill when I see your work noticed by mainstream press from time to time

New episode: Breaking2, Nike's engineered assault on the 2-hour marathon. How Monza's F1 curves were chosen for speed, and why Kipchoge's 2:00:25 turned "impossible" into a matter of when, not whether. The 25 seconds that changed running. Listen now. #Breaking2 #Marathon #RunningHistory #TheLongRun
Breaking2: The Sub-Two Marathon Project — The Long Run
On May 6, 2017, three runners lined up before dawn on a Formula 1 circuit outside Milan to chase a number that physiologists had called impossible: two hours for the marathon. This episode goes inside Nike's Breaking2 project — the science, the stagecraft, and the 25 seconds that separated Eliud Kip

Breaking2 fell 25 seconds short in 2017 — and it was never going to count as a record anyway. Rotating pacers, a drafting car, a closed circuit: it was a lab experiment dressed as a race. That's the part everyone forgets. #Marathon #RunningHistory #Kipchoge #Running #TheLongRun

Everyone credits the carbon plate for the Vaporfly's speed. Nike's own engineers say the foam does most of the work — the plate mostly stiffens the sole so the foam can do its thing. The "spring" story came largely from people dissecting patent images. #Running #Marathon #RunningHistory #TheLongRun

what a fantastic article and sport

so running at 6:00min/mile is 10mph

can you imagine going three times faster at 30mph
and then tripping or other incident?

by the way they figured out the inverted V for drafting during marathons too, for the "breaking2" event

No shame in her attempt but I am super-dooper confused

Experts already figured out the very best pacer formation for maximum drafting, yet they didn't use it?

There are multiple papers on this
and it was in one of the Breaking2 documentaries

Only leading V formation is best or it becomes worse
