Municipal guide of the day: the former Essex Urban District Council of Hornchurch. In 1965 the area transferred to the new London Borough of Havering. This guide features a great model of the proposed, but unbuilt, civic centre, although the swimming pool was completed in a similar style.

Carlos Mérida (1891–1984) was a Guatemalan-born artist and naturalized Mexican citizen who pioneered a unique artistic style merging European modernism with pre-Columbian and indigenous Latin American culture. Famous for his paintings, prints, and massive mosaic murals, he transitioned from figurative folk art to pure geometric abstraction. Mérida moved to Mexico City in 1919, and combined the abstract styles found in European modernism with pre-Hispanic aesthetics. Festival of Birds, 1959, is an illustration of his approach—the inclusion of the birds above the figures’ outstretched hands may be inspired by a glyph of a bird from Maya texts, which Mérida was known to admire. Like many other Mexican Modernists, he turned to ancient artworks as models for the dynamism of his paintings.

I didn't know for years, until I was old and it was no longer classified, that the new German site was the first nuclear armed missile site we had in Europe. My ex, who served there with my dad, told me, said the Russians knew we were there and MIGs would buzz them with some regularity. I'm probably better off no knowing that at the time!

Gabo was born in Russia in 1890, and was an early proponent of Constructivism. While his early sculptures were figurative, he moved on to abstract, architectonic works. His independent streak and attitude toward the meaning of art ran counter to the Bolsheviks' doctrine of artistic utility ie propaganda, and prompted Gabo's departure for Berlin in 1922. There, he produced designs for Diaghilev's ballet La Chatte (The Cat) in 1926, lectured at the Bauhaus in 1928, came into contact with Hans Richter and Kurt Schwitters, and had an important solo show at the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover in 1930. By 1932, Nazism drove him and Pevsner first to Paris where he joined Abstraction-Création (Abstraction-Creation), in the company of Piet Mondrian and other De Stijl artists, and then to London in 1936. There he became acquainted with Herbert Read and Ben Nicholson, with whom he edited Circle in 1937. Through the industrial chemist John Sisson, he was introduced to Perspex, the new plastic developed by Imperial Chemical Industries, which he used in several iconic works, such as Translucent Variation on Spheric Theme (1937). While living in Cornwall during World War II, he continued to experiment with different media, even while some materials were in short supply: Linear Construction in Space (1942) incorporated nylon microfilament. In 1946 Gabo emigrated to the United States. After a major exhibition of his work in 1948 (shared with his brother Pevsner), which provided a platform for his text "The Philosophy of Constructivist Art," he began to show regularly in the U.S. and Europe and to undertake public commissions, such as his 1951 Construction Suspended in Space for the Baltimore Museum of Art. In the 1950s Gabo continued to explore scientific and mathematical images through a new medium, wood engraving, which he utilized throughout the last two decades of his life.
