Another Caddisfly larva feeding, this time on a more typical food, scraping algae/biofilm off a dead leaf
Pretty sure this is Limnephilidae

Sadly the cased caddisfly larvae Glyphotaelius pellucidus, that lives in my #Somerset #garden #pond missed London Fashion Week this year, but their cases are works of art! What perfectly nibbled circles of leaves💚

Instead of a visit from Wogan, I had one from Baldrick. He left me a Turnip (and three Caddisflies turned up to have a look). #teammoth

NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀

Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯

A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛

Let's dive in! 🧵👇 1/x

This American Dipper is from last spring. When the young are about to fledge, mom and dad are delivering food constantly. This adult has some juicy caddisflies for the nestlings.

Small #caddisflies that could be micro-moths are still something I pot. My eyes aren't quite ready to work in the mornings, so even though I can see how they resemble caddisflies in shape, it's always a blur, so I start to question my initial conclusion.

Caddisflies (Trichoptera) are usually found near lakes, ponds, and streams. Their larvae are aquatic and most build cases to conceal and protect themselves. Although adults resemble moths and fly at night, their wings are covered in hairs instead of scales. Palmyra Michigan, 29 Sep 2014.

Sorting samples today from Honduras. These are some of the most delicate cased caddisflies (Trichoptera) I’ve come across.

They construct them using tiny stones held together by silk produced from modified salivary glands

🧵 There's this amazing figure depicting the evolution of caddisflies from a 1939 paper by Margery and Lorus Milne. It captured my imagination as an undergraduate and helped influence me to study caddisflies. #scientificillustration

this is crazy I had no idea there were marine caddisflies, let alone ones that laid their eggs in sea stars?

I'm quite interested in the avant-garde movement of the New Caddisflies actually? They're building beautiful as well as functional architecture from human detritus specifically -- iridescent plastic beads from discarded friendship bracelets, crumbled concrete to stay submerged in fast-flowing water.
When we learned to speak with bugs, we discovered they're very fond of the Arts. Ants write endlessly dense novels of political intrigue, cicadas are pioneers of heavy metal, and dung beetles are obsessed with sculpture. Whose art most fascinates you?
