It looks like an ancient mushroom garden at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the badlands of North Dakota where these cool hoodoos dot the landscape.

Lybrook Fossil Area is a colorful, stark spectrum of earth tones, ranging from yellow, brown, pink, and purple to stark, tall hills of layered black and white. It is a cornucopia of peculiar rock formations, including tall spires, hoodoos, towering caprocks, and other bizarre geologic specimens.

The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks in New Mexico is a magical place. Cone-shaped tent rock formations from volcanic eruptions over 6 million years ago.

It's #RedWed Wednesday, so here's a red, red rock in pre-dawn red glow at Ah Shi Sle Pah wilderness, NW New Mexico.

...and speaking of hoodoos, here's a fine stocky fellow who appears to be gazing with disapproval or contempt at the #scape at large.

Nah, the methane will most likely stay below the reservoirs' caprocks and should stay underground imo.

Thanks! It really is a wild area. In the nearby De-Na-Zin, there is a remote canyon where some stones have been weathered into perfect giant spheres and those have also become caprocks on hoodoos. I will show those later.

I don't know why that abstract refers to the Cap Rock Member of the Ogallala when Bob Differendal had a paper years ago saying you can't distinguish it in Nebraska, there are multiple cemented "caprocks" in the Ogallala there.

New research shows H2 and CO2 can be stored in shale caprocks with different storage sites. Small nanopores slow gas diffusion, enabling long-term storage. This advances clean energy and carbon capture solutions.

Assessing Caprock Sealing via Breakthrough Pressure Tests
In a groundbreaking study published in Environmental Earth Sciences, researchers have unveiled new insights into the sealing capabilities of caprocks used in underground gas storage facilities. The study addresses a critical challenge in the energy sector: ensuring the long-term containment of gases stored deep beneath the Earth’s surface. By exploring the breakthrough pressures of caprocks under complex stress conditions, this research provides an advanced understanding of how subterranean geological formations behave when subjected to dynamic stress paths, which is vital for safe and efficient underground gas storage.

The unique landscape in my photo is the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in northern New Mexico. The name "Kasha-Katuwe" translates to "white cliffs" in the Keresan language of the Cochiti Pueblo.
