'Yet there were Roman citizens obstinately determined to destroy both themselves and their country.'

Wait until I drop my thoughts about how Cicero’s ~Orations Against Catiline~ are some of the most important works ever.

Calling someone a Catiline was like one of their biggest political insults!

Would it be too on the nose to teach a whole course on the Catiline Conspiracy?

According to Appian, Catilina funded the Catiline Conspiracy by raising “a great deal of money from a good number of women who hoped to lose their husbands in the uprising.”

When, O Catiline, do you mean to
cease abusing our patience? How
long is that madness of yours still to
mock us? When is there to be an end of that unbridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now?

I also like, based on the naming conventions and who was cast, had assumed that Coppola was about to go full Mary Beard on the legacy of Cicero and the Catiline conspiracy, a political upheaval that she likened to the passage of the PATRIOT Act. But no. That was not what where Coppola was going.

All I can think of right now is the scene in Mountainhead where they’re tip-toeing down the hallway whisper-chanting “Catiline Conspiracy! Catiline Conspiracy!”

Trump: Sulla, Caesar, or Catiline? Discuss, with examples.

An hour ago my ancient history students said the Catiline conspiracy was poorly planned and embarrassing. And now this… ugh.

Hating your in-laws takes on a whole different sheen in ancient Rome. Early in his career, Catiline is reputed to have murdered his own brother-in-law… But only because Sulla forced him to, right Sulla?

This is a really good day/week/year to have your students work through Caesar and Cato’s speeches in Sallust’s Catiline.

I actually think this could be a great mixed history / Latin course in which the students read the full Catiline Orations in Latin, with historical context

This is Cesare Maccari’s painting of Cicero’s oration denouncing Catiline. That’s Catiline sitting alone on the right, because no one else wants to be near him.

Catiline problems require Ciceronean solutions.

If Catiline didn't exist Cicero would've invented him.

Up by 4 o’clock in the morning, and read Cicero’s Second Oration against Catiline, which pleased me exceedingly; and more I discern therein than ever I thought was to be found in him; but I perceive it was my ignorance, and that he is as good a writer as ever I read in my life.

all those straight men were lying when they claimed they think about the roman empire constantly btw ask them one question about sallust’s take on the conspiracy of catiline and they’ll stare at you blankly like a goldfish
