I've been seeing more and more use of stock and flow diagrams in science teaching. Has anyone been using them/point me to good blogs on them to see if this is something that can work for me?? #cogscisci #chatbiology #chatchemistry #chatphysics

Is there anybody out there working on reading in science?? We are trialling echo reading and paired reading within mixed groups-has anybody has a lot of success in their contexts that they could share??? Thanks for any ideas #cogscisci #iteachbio #chatbiology #chatchemistry #chatphysics

For scientists out there (students, profs, professionals in many areas, etc):

What do you believe are qualities and / or identities of a good scientist?

I would love to learn your thoughts!

I probably should've tagged this to reach more teachers/ people in schools. Please help answer a quick question if you can spare 30 seconds :-)

#UKEd #ChatChemistry #EduSky #REd24 (that's a cheeky tag to reach lots of teachers! Sorry :-) )
Quick plea for help - could you answer this question for me?

If you teach at a secondary school, how long is your afternoon stretch? ie how long are children in lessons after lunch without a break?

eg. at our school, it's 2 hours

I'm wondering how common a 3 hour stretch is (for personal reasons)

Sorry I couldn't keep up with #chatchemistry tonight. I was cycling home with the kids from their swim session.
Been nice to catch up afterwards. Some great ideas.

Thanks to this week's host! :-)

Oh yes! This as well!
I still use these sometimes, even for areas I've taught every year for the past 18 years!!
I like his way of approaching things...

The MaChemGuy videos for A Level Chemistry are probably useful refreshers if there are any areas of chemistry ECTs are less confident with #ChatChemistry

without a doubt, the resources on Education in Chemistry (from the RSC)
but particularly the misconceptions stuff (this is for own subject knowledge as well as supporting students - really worth checking your own understanding of key concepts)

When teaching about bonding in metals what do you call the black spheres in the images in the article? Atoms…..but they are charged? Ions……but has the electron been fully lost? Atomic cores? As teachers do we add to student misconceptions with the models we introduce?

Just catching up with #chatchemistry from last night.
Sorry I couldn't join live. Always coincides with kids' swimming and dinner. Nice to see it starting again. Thanks to this week's host for keeping the conversation flowing.
Good evening #ChatChemistry and welcome to our first chat of the year!

My S2 did great work testing leaves for starch to see the need for sunlight.

I said this was likely to be one of the science experiments their parents remembered from school.

What else is on that list? What's there from other subjects?

Delighted to see this go live. Looking forward to using it with Y13 to compare the different types of chromatography and introduce them to how the techniques are used in industry. #chatchemistry
Use this helpful infographic to explain chromatography types – paper, TLC, HPLC and GC – and how chemists use them in commercial settings.
