Last night we watched the chimney swifts come to roost in the chimney of the historic Catlow Theater in Barrington, IL. We estimated over 500 swifts circled and eventually dove into the chimney to spend the night.

Here’s some close-ups of my painting of Lisa Mintz urban nature advocate. Director of #urbannatureeducation in #Montreal. She really loves #ChimneySwifts so these were included (threatened species). Entirely #embroidered freehand. They are each about 6 inches.

#ChimneySwifts are ENDANGERED #SpeciesAtRisk in NS.
These birds tend to nest in urban chimneys, hence the name. Chimney Swift have brown–grey feathers with a distinguished pointed body, long narrow wings, and short tail. Their flight is described as rapid and jerky.

• This #project is aimed at gathering first sightings of #swifts returning from #migration.

NYC, by 13Apr’26, has yet to record a #migrant on either #iNat or #eBird.
