Turning the tide towards positive tipping points
Four days, 12 plenaries, 20 action workshops, 521 participants from 37 countries and one aim: push the earth and human systems towards positive tipping points. The Global Tipping Points Conference (GTP) 2026, co-chaired by Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University, the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, was held in Asia for the first time. The conference at Sunway University journeyed from science and the emergence of positive tipping points on day one to the human dimensions of change on day two, examining why values, culture and faith shape societies. It then turned to the roles of finance, law and governance making change endure amid growing uncertainty on day three, before culminating in practical solutions for cities and bioregions on day four. The Global Tipping Points initiative, led by Global Systems Institute founding director Prof Tim Lenton, is a global research and policy programme that identifies critical thresholds in Earth systems and translates science into actionable solutions to accelerate climate action, clean energy adoption and ecosystem restoration. Lenton said this third edition of GTP moved deliberately beyond establishing the science and evidence base to act on the science...

What can Asia do to avoid crossing crucial climate tipping points?
Ambulance sirens blaring throughout cities amid deadly heat waves. Sustained wildfires that worsen cross-border air pollution and kill thousands. Weakening ocean currents that devastate crops and flood communities. These are some of the signs of a planet approaching critical thresholds as a result of human-induced climate change. Beyond these climate tipping points, the Earth’s natural systems could undergo self-propelling, potentially irreversible changes. How close are we to crossing the thresholds? And more importantly, what can Asia, home to about 60% of the world’s population, do to avert them? That was the central question at the four-day Global Tipping Points Conference held in Malaysia earlier this month. It was the third edition of the conference series, which was launched in Britain in 2022, and the first one to be held in Asia. With global warming now set to breach 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, failing to meet the limit agreed upon by the 2015 Paris Agreement, scientists say the Earth’s systems are at risk of crossing multiple climate tipping points. For one, coral reefs in warm tropical waters are dying at an unprecedented rate and scale, as their thermal tipping point of 1.2 C of warming has already been crossed...

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.

But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.

Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

How Close Are We to the Amazon's Tipping Point? New MAAP Report Reveals 15% of the Amazon's Original Forest Lost, Flying River Routes to the Southwest Are Most Affected
A new report from Amazon Conservation’s Monitoring of the Andes Amazon Program (MAAP) finds that 15% of the Amazon basin’s original primary forest is already gone, and that the losses are concentrated along the moisture routes some regions depend on most. The report, MAAP #250: Amazon Tipping Point – Where Are We? (2026 Update), estimates that 97.06 million hectares (240 million acres) of primary forest have been lost across the Amazon biome’s nine countries through the end of 2025, mainly due to human-caused deforestation and fires. Total forest loss rose from 13.2% in 2021, as estimated in Amazon Conservation’s first assessment (MAAP #164), to 15% through 2025. Between 2022 and 2025 alone, an additional 13.04 million hectares (32.2 million acres) of primary forest were lost, an area nearly 15 times the size of Yellowstone National Park. This includes record-breaking losses due to fire in 2024, following the 2023’s strong El Niño season (MAAP #229). This additional loss of primary forest brings the Amazon closer to its tipping point, which scientific literature suggests could be triggered at around 25% forest loss, in combination with climate change impacts. The analysis also breaks down forest loss along the Amazon’s seasonal flying rivers. It...

Sustainable Seafood Reaches a Tipping Point in the United States
WASHINGTON — The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a global environmental nonprofit focused on wild fisheries sustainability, released 10 years of consumer insights showing how expectations around sustainability have moved from a niche consideration to a mainstream expectation, especially when it comes to seafood. The report, entitled, “A Decade of Change: Sustainability Now a Mainstream Concern of U.S. Seafood Consumers,” underscores that consumers increasingly seek independent verification of environmental claims, and that economic realities continue to shape purchasing decisions. “I am optimistic about U.S. consumer attitudes to our planet, the food they consume, and the concept of sustainability and preserving our planet for future generations,” said Laura McDearis, U.S. Program Director, Marine Stewardship Council. “Ten years of consumer research has made it clear: sustainability is no longer a niche request for U.S. consumers; it’s the expectation.” Conducted on behalf of the MSC by GlobeScan, an independent insights and advisory firm, the research tracks how consumers think about seafood, ocean sustainability, ecolabels, and the MSC program. 15,000 U.S. seafood consumers shared their perspectives dating back to 2016. The data shows that U.S. consumer support for sustainability has steadily climbed to match levels traditionally only seen among European consumers. Report highlights include: Americans...

Humanity has crossed 7 major climate tipping points. But there's still hope
Earth’s climate is increasingly growing unstable, with seven of 16 key indicators reaching record extremes, even as the world makes progress in switching to cleaner energy, a new report has warned. Published in the journal BioScience, the seventh annual State of the Climate report said that rising greenhouse gas emissions, melting ice and warming oceans are pushing the planet into increasingly dangerous territory. “We are witnessing the rapid destabilisation of the Earth’s climate system. This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present,” the authors wrote. The report was co-led by William Ripple, professor emeritus at Oregon State University, and Christopher Wolf, a scientist with Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Associates. RISING EMISSIONS, WARMING OCEANS SOUND ALARM The report tracked 16 indicators covering greenhouse gases, global temperatures, ice loss, ocean conditions, energy use and deforestation. Atmospheric carbon dioxide exceeded 428 parts per million in May 2026, roughly 50% above pre-industrial levels. Fossil fuel consumption rose by 0.9% in 2025, with oil, coal and gas use all reaching record highs. Furthermore, annual carbon dioxide emissions from energy-related activities also crossed 41 billion tonnes for the first time. Naturally, the pace of global warming appears to be...
