More adorable creatures from last weekend at Sandhills WMA. Ichneumonid wasp, apparently genus Anomalon, parasitizes beetle larvae. Grass fly, apparently genus Chlorops, larvae eat grass roots I think.

A nice little Chlorops from Waitby Greenriggs Nature Reserve, Cumbria, collected on the @dipteristsforum.bsky.social summer 2024 meeting. Awaiting confirmation but seems to be C. geminatus, a species not on the UK list

A frit fly (not a fruit fly!) on this #invertefest #flyday #flyfriday.
Seen in beautiful Sommarøy, Norway in June. Genus Chlorops per iNat, it was the biggest frit fly I’d ever seen (still pretty small). I love these tiny cuties.

On second thought it may be one of the less broad-faced Chlorops, my bad. Chloropid in any case, they can be hard to tell apart at that angle.

Grass Fly - Genus Chlorops. It defies logic that I should get such a good photo of an insect that is only a fraction of an inch in size. Both the nature and photography gods were smiling on me.

Very nice pictures. I can't quite make out but I think the scutellum isn't flat enough for Thaumatomyia. Thaumatomyia also has a line of hairs clearly within the margins of the ocellar triangle, these are on the margin in Chlorops. Also the katepisternal mark is shining in Thaumatomyia 1/2

What key do you use for Chlorops? I used Mike Hackston's key, but that doesn't cover the Chlorops genus.

A quick walk down by the Thames this evening turned up this Chlorops (Anthracophaga) frontosus, apparently associated with Carex spp.

Chlorops larvae feed within the shoots of various species of grass and sedge. Some species are agricultural pests but many are specialists of different semi-natural grassland and wetland habitats. There are at least 24 species know from the UK of which 11 have conservation status
