Energy transition will not happen without political struggles:

"The cost of net-zero will fall mostly on the rich, fossil-capital holders in particular, because phasing out oil and gas devalues their assets."

Trump says he’s “terminating” a Biden-era rule cutting methane from oil and gas drilling, claiming it will save $45B. Methane drives about a third of warming — and the rule aimed to prevent 58M tons by 2038.

Canada-EU Summit is Carney's Best Chance to Advance Climate Policy, Analysts Say
This week’s Canada-EU Summit in Montreal is the federal government’s best opportunity to bring climate change closer to the centre of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s global trade and economic diversification agenda, concludes an analysis published on the eve of the summit. “The EU is the one partner able to give Canada’s energy-supply strategy the long-term direction it currently lacks: one in which clean energy increasingly takes precedence over conventional energy in decision-making,” write climate diplomacy veteran Eddy Pérez, principal consultant at Montreal-based PerezStrat, and Michael Brewster, senior director at Global Public Affairs. “The EU is the partnership where all of Canada’s middle-power tactics converge—and the only one where climate is built into the architecture rather than appended to it.” Carney has been pushing hard to expand Canada’s ties with Europe, part of a wider quest for new economic relationships to reduce the country’s reliance on its unreliable neighbour to the south. In their paper, Pérez and Brewster track 19 major international partnerships that Canada has announced or concluded in the 16 months since June, 2025. In the lead-up to the Montreal summit, key EU countries pushed back on explicit language that would have declared Canada an “associated member” of the...

William Nordhaus, Nobelist who influenced climate policy, dies at 85
William D. Nordhaus, a Yale economist and Nobel laureate who tabulated the economic wreckage of carbon emissions and influenced climate policy across several presidential administrations, died Friday at his home in New Haven, Conn. He was 85. The cause was glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, according to a statement from Yale University. In 2018, Mr. Nordhaus shared the Nobel in economic science with Paul M. Romer, an economist at New York University. The Nobel committee cited Mr. Nordhaus’ work in developing a method to balance climate change’s long-term damage with the costs required to contain it. The model, which Mr. Nordhaus refined over decades, has underpinned dozens of regulations around the world aimed at limiting fossil fuels and seeded the ground for a new field of research that bridges the gap between economics and earth science. “He played a crucial role in terms of bringing consideration of the natural environment into the mainstream of economics, whereas earlier, it was sort of a fringe area,” said Robert Stavins, director of the environmental economics program at Harvard University, who wrote about Mr. Nordhaus’ impact. Mr. Nordhaus saw climate change as a clear threat to humankind, but he emphasized that potential...

For US Democrats, climate policy is now about energy bills
President Donald Trump's administration has gutted US climate policy. Yet even as wildfires, record heat waves and flooding hit communities across the country, Democrats are keeping quiet about global warming on the midterm campaign trail. Instead, candidates are packaging climate policy as an affordability issue, stressing how Americans are struggling to afford gas, groceries and to insure their homes against climate-fueled weather extremes. Take Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico in Texas, who represents the party's best chance at winning the race in the Republican stronghold in nearly 40 years. Though he makes some mention of climate change on his campaign's "energy and environment" page, that is not his focus. His pledges center around lowering energy costs, providing emergency relief for spiking utility bills, making data centers pay for their own grid upgrades and growing energy sector jobs. This aligns with analysis from nonprofit news organization Inside Climate News showing that the Democrats have dramatically reduced mentions of climate change in their press releases and campaign messaging. "We've entered an interesting space where climate policy doesn't need to be called climate policy to be climate policy," Max Frankel, executive director of the SEEC Institute, a nonprofit that helps guide climate policy...
