i don’t really believe in any institution that can’t co-opt newcomers
like, if you’re old enough, you realize that most of the people who live in The City came from somewhere else, that’s one of the big things about what make cities fucking great, no one’s from there, everyone you meet had bigger dreams
i was a teenager in a town of around 35K people in the 90s, and any teenager with any ambition or creativity at all wanted nothing more than to move to The City, so i have a particular contempt for people from The City who wants to keep new people out. these are the people who built The City.

I’ve lost track of the number of times an immigrant has told me they had to sit on a prison bus in the back of an airport for six, 10, 20 hours with no food or water and being told to urinate in a corner or onto themselves.
