And evolution is an ever-present phenomenon. Along with the other Devonian placoderms that would be present in the oceans, I imagine them radiating into niches specific to the Enclosure environment. Elderfolk avoid the sea because of them.

(A modern rendering of dunkleosteus by Archaeoraptor)
A rendering of a dunkleosteus with the more modern, "fully skinned" appearance and without the "hunch-back" shape taken from the body-plan of Coccosteus, a related placoderm that was only about a foot long and lived in shallow water environments. Dunkleosteus, by contrast, was a massive ocean-going predator.

On a rainy Devonian day, a Tiktaalik father guards his eggs in a small forest river. Meanwhile, his hunting mate has her eye on a Bothriolepis. Another Bothriolepis is eating something buried in the river sediment, drawing the attention of a Coccosteus.

#Tiktaalik #Devonian #paleoart #MyArt
A watercolour showing a scene partially under water and partially above it. The water's surface breaks the frame about three quarters of the way up. Underwater, the scene is dominated by a Tiktaalik - a large grey lobe-finned fish with a broad, triangular head. Its body is diagonal to the viewer, but its face stares straight at us with its mouth open in threat. Its eyes are small and close together. It it slightly propper up on its front fins and its tailfin has a display structure featuring a light-coloured stripe and a blueish stripe. All around it is a dense patch of Chara algae, long stalks that branch into bunches of leaf-like structures several times (typically four times but some of the algae depicted differ). Several of the algal leafs around the Tiktaalik are speckled with small white eggs. Further in the background, the forest river's water and the algae prevent us from seeing very much. What is visible are another Tiktaalik and three smaller fish: two Bothriolepis, placoderms with a vaguely mandolin-shaped body and long frontal fins. One of them is kicking up a cloud of dust around it as it digs into the sediment. The other is farther away and near the second Tiktaalik - who is mostly hidden behind a sunken log and looking at the distant Bothriolepis. The final visible fish, a Coccosteus, is about the same size as the Bothriolepis and swimming towards the nearer one. The surface of the water is showing the impact of many raindrops. In the top quarter of the watercolour, we can see the forested shores of the river, obscured by a lot of rain. The right bank is closest and its nearest part is a muddy shore overgrown by Rhacophyton, a somewhat fern-like plant, and Archaeopteris trees can be seen on its far side. They grow straight from the ground without side branches until they suddenly branch out into a series of horizontal flat round canopies. A few small spiders can be spotted on the shores.

Last day to sign up for my art blog before the next issue's out! This one's about 70s-era prehistoric animal illustrations. 70s-sci-fi-art.ghost.io

Here's the sneak peek: Some sea creatures by Axel Ebel.
A handful of colorful armored prehistoric fish under water, including Pterygotus, Stylonurus, Tremataspis, Birkenia, Thelodus, and Anglaspis. Three jellyfish float near red corals underwater, along with a troop of trilobites and one onychophoran. An Ichthyostega fish climbs up on to a prehistoric beach with its legs, while a cutaway view shows the underwater view along the bottom of the image, revealing other prehistoric fish including a Coccosteus, Pterichthydoes, and Cephalaspis.

Fishing 🐟🦞
My OC, Zatch fishing on a reef underwater while accompanied by a curious little plesiosaur. He is aiming at a coccosteus with a harpoon. They are surrounded by different prehistoric sea creatures such as ammonites and trilobites. He's wearing a boxer-shaped blue bathing suit and a bead & fangs collar.

There's a lot of uncertainty about their size because only the front, armored portions fossilized well (see image of 4 models), but we know they were at least as big as pickup trucks, larger than any modern Great White shark, and no doubt fearsome to behold in person.

Let's talk about the chompers.
English: Diagram featuring the multiple size estimations of the large arthrodire placoderm Dunkleosteus terrelli, in comparison with a ~1.8 m (5.9 ft) tall human. Different silhouettes and morphology are explained by: Both Anderson & Westneat 2007 and Williams 2007 provided length estimates for Dunkleosteus without a reliable depiction/reconstruction of the taxon, therefore, the present silhouette is based on outdated depictions of Dunkleosteus based on Coccosteus which were quite common at the time of these publications.[1][2] More recently, both Ferrón et al. 2017 and Engelman 2023 presented different reconstructions for Dunkleosteus, as well as different fin morphologies. As such, their respective reconstructions are reflected here.[3][4] The two first silhouettes are based on the old Dunkleosteus skeletal by Scott Hartman. This skeletal has been updated in his website, featuring a different tail and dorsal fin anatomy. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dunkleosteus_terrelli_

A fossilized placoderm of a Coccosteus cuspidatus from the Sandwick Fish Beds in Orkney, Scotland. This Devonian aged genus of arthrodiran armored fish was fairly small compared to its famous relatives like the Dunkleosteus. #FossilFriday

Another #Coccosteus update. I still need a pet name for this one. Having her listed as "second coccosteus (plus client number)" is starting to feel a little mean.
Suggestions welcome :)

This lovely #Coccosteus was a placoderm, or armoured fish, which lived in the seas of the Devonian (~400 million years ago). This one was found in the Caithness Flagstones at Achanarras - Scotland. #fossilfriday 106 hours of prep time.

Scene depicting aquatic and terrestrial life in the Devonian. On the right, an Ichthyostega with a jet black body and white cream underbelly lies on the shore of an ancient stream surrounded by horsetails, clubmosses and other primitive vegetation. In the water below, three armored fish- Pterichthyodes (yellowish green fish, left), Coccosteus (dark purple fish, middle), Cephalaspis (brick brown fish, right)- forage along the muddy river floor. Illustrated by Alex Ebel. For #FossilFriday here’s a specimen I found at the start of the year on my birthday!

These fish bones belong to an armour plated fish (possibly Coccosteus) that lived 385 million years ago. They were found on Cromarty beach where my beloved Hugh Miller found his back in 1830 - his bday gift for me!
