Found a chart that goes through 2025. This problem has plateaued and isn't returning to pre-pandemic levels.

St Paul skeet:
New coffeeshop on Selby across from Whole Foods: Lowboy. Opened yesterday in the space where at least two other whimsically named coffeeshops tried. Same floorplan.
$5.50 for a cup of coffee. Which, okay, gotta pay bills and wages but wow.

There are also coffeeshops and pets and outdoors places where nature sounds happen, and there are hours upon hours of available recordings of those ambient soundscapes that can be replayed from anywhere one has an internet connection attached to a device with a speaker.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Like if you're leaving a big wet condensation ring on the table? Sure. I think that being a guest somewhere and making a mess is uncouth. But it's not about the mess it's about the coffee! Also so many interviews MEET AT COFFEESHOPS so it's legit a moot point

My weekly "Greater Seattle" column is up. I wish Wilson’s proposal did more for the bars and restaurants and coffeeshops that are already permitted, but increasingly struggling.

Decline in 3rd spaces is real, but the transition of coffeeshops to transactional spaces with no social vibe was driven by technology / cultural shift feedback loop. They're still there, just dead space now. Parks are the same. In short: It's the phones, not the lack of spaces to hang out.

I blame phones more than dollars. The coffeeshops and bars are often still there. 2000 AD wasn't *that* long ago. What has changed is that there's no community in those spaces. People still buy coffee but nobody stops and chats (and those who do are weird).

Living somewhere dense enough that several coffeeshops, a dozen bars, a couple of libraries and a variety of good restaurants are all a 15 minute walk from me continues to feel like such a cheat code for living a good life full of community www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/b...

Same in Ottawa, with more
variable quality on the drip but Happy Goat is pretty phenomenal. I cultivated the habit of sticking to drip because I wanted to be able to work in coffeeshops without breaking the bank.

maybe if we promote this film - or remake it? - we could get better hot chocolate in coffeeshops? Serve good hot cocoa, it'll destroy all our toxins and we'll be healthier and happier.

(Also, societally we need more "chocolate will improve your well-being" and less "eat more sauerkraut and whey")

Even at the apex of Starbucks' popularity, local, independent coffeeshops that open near a Starbucks tend to do as well or better than their SB neighbors.

For decades, the Netherlands lived with a long-standing contradiction—“backdoor problem”—coffeeshops could sell cannabis under tolerance, while commercial cultivation supply remained outside regulated framework.

Findings show little change in consumption.
