Seems like a turf cudgel. My first really big paper had cogsci, CS, linguistics, polisci, music theory people and some people were mad it wasn't interdisciplinary *enough* 🙃

I'm actually working on a paper right now in which we address this issue to some extent (that cogsci needs to have an actual theory of what it means for something to be innate & can't just handwave about it)- it's not the whole point of the paper, but it's in there and happy to share once it's out

Casually dropping a hot single from a band featuring Rees, Schneider, Webb, Davies, Shostak, Cleland and many others, directed by Steven Dick and Mark Lupisella from NASA. I'm basically an astronaut now. 😁 Coming in 2028 by Cambridge University Press!

2/ In our preprint, we propose a computational framework in which episodic memory encoding and retrieval leverage a single, shared generative process that represents new memories by recombining existing knowledge:

Is it personal, or is it just a sort of cultish belief in CogSci itself?

Yeah, I'd a CogSci lecturer who used to refer to it as the Stanford Prison Performance Art Project.

Unreal that Zimbardo was publishing nonpeer-reviewed work (e.g. computer games, porn, GWOT 'heroes') for policy discussions 50+ years after doing this bullshit

Yeah that does seem like an stronger claim to make than the view that many people in cogsci endorse. I have in mind nativists who compare the development of some psychological traits to the onset of puberty or tadpoles becoming frogs

Your critique seems to be about a different kind of theory right?

Alternatively, if the idea is not that biology enables specific functions, how are we supposed to detect consciousness using cogsci approaches? See here for a longer form of this argument: www.cell.com/trends-open/...

Curious what you think :)

Welp, that was a totally random 2-day study. I wish I had other examples to work with. The only substantial thing that comes to mind is the artifact analogy, which would be

l : p_1 :: r : e :: c : p_2

#cogsci
Let g, p_1, t, p_2, p_3 be ordered pairs of domains such that

g::p_1::t::p_2
g::p_3

Seeing that g::p_3, we can apply p_3 to p_1, t, and p_2.

g::p_1::t::p_2
g::p_3
p_1::p_3
t::p_3
p_2::p_3

In this manner, we fill out the conceptual structure among domains or ordered pairs thereof.

The short version is this:
1. Monotropism is very much the best account of autism @oolong.co.uk
2. It is a phenomenological account of autism, not a mechanistic account and that is critically important.
3. When you ask cogsci type questions about attention, interesting answers drop out.

Studies about cognition and problem-solving can feel intimidating, but we rarely get much guidance or help understanding methods. I notice that even accomplished researchers in other fields, outside of psych and cogsci, can be very reluctant to weigh in on methods. But methods shape EVERYTHING

Relearning the basics of the cogsci of polysemy for the ~30th time, I was struck by how closely mental content is associated with lexical items.

Is there discussion on whether this is an artifact of experiments using words to elicit content or instead a deep feature of human cognition?
