Not much flowering in the greenhouse right now, but there’s this: Columnea microcalyx. Started from cutting about three and a half years ago, the stems are now almost 6 ft (1.8 m) long with flowers on the last 8-12” (20-30 cm). 🌱

It’s Columnea microcalyx season again. The trailing stems are well over 6 ft long now. 🌴 🌱

Here’s another epiphytic Columnea (#Gesneriaceae) that uses red spots on its leaf undersides to attract hummingbirds to its small, non-showy flowers. This is Columnea cruenta of Panama. 📷: Dick Culbert CCBY2 #TropicalBotany #pollination #ornithophily #gesneriad #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪🌱

🌱💛BRIGHT! Miniature Columnea 'Apollo' (Magne Haualand, 1979) got off to a slow start in 2025, but popping welcome color today. Have always loved Columneas but most are so BIG & cascading, this little tyke fits on top of the microwave. A new favorite Gesneriad & #SundayYellow pregame.😎 Gesneriaceae

More amazing botanical discoveries in Peru.
Rocio Rojas and colleagues describe new endemic Columnea species (Gesneriaceae). Together with recent discoveries, the number of Columnea species known in Peru increases to 36, concentrated in vulnerable Andean cloud forests.

Columnea consanguinea (#Gesneriaceae) has small, yellow flowers in the leaf axils. Not showy. Instead, it attracts hummingbird pollinators with bright red spots on leaf undersides. It’s one of several epiphytic Columnea spp. to do so. #TropicalBotany #ornithophily #gesneriad #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
