Yesterday, MHM Wales’ Caring Community Café at Quarella Road welcomed familiar faces and new visitors alike. Our café is a welcoming space where people can drop in for a chat, enjoy a warm drink, and take part in a range of activities. Games and bingo brought a touch of friendly competition to the morning, while the aroma of coffee and fresh cakes filled the room. Attendees had the chance to connect, catch up, and enjoy a relaxed, sociable atmosphere. Our volunteers were on hand, serving drinks

A new community cafe initiative at Villaggio Sant' Antonio aged care facility in Page, Canberra, aims to combat loneliness by fostering social connections through daily coffee sessions. The Little Italy Village Cafe, open seven mornings a week from 7am to 11am, is designed as an inclusive space where locals of all ages can gather. Inspired by traditional Italian village cafes, the venue serves food and coffee prepared on-site and is open to everyone, not just residents and their families. Villaggio Sant' Antonio CEO Giulia Jones emphasized the importance of integrating aged care with community life, challenging the notion that elderly individuals should be isolated. The cafe is part of the Foundation for Social Health's Third Spaces Network, an Australian-first initiative targeting loneliness by creating informal social hubs. With 40% of Canberrans reporting loneliness, the project seeks to bridge social divides by offering a welcoming environment for interactions. The cafe's success on its opening day, with a diverse crowd of early-morning visitors, highlights its potential to become a vital community gathering spot. This initiative addresses both the social isolation of older Australians and broader loneliness trends, promoting collective well-being through everyday connections.
