At any age, you should not be alone near water if there is any risk of falling in.

Competitive swimmer here, BTW. I'm a fucking fish.

The US is not a liberal democracy, and hasn’t been since January. Constitution, rule of law, checks and balances, individual rights — all not in operation.

It’s now a mixed regime, autarky, competitive authoritarianism.

Not at risk. Not could be. Is.

Doesn’t mean that’s forever. But it is now.
This whole NYT account about the weaponization of DOJ is beyond disturbing. Kinda feels like the US government fell in January.

competitive pokemon is inherently somewhat luck based so you may think this primes me for the current gambling epidemic but it actually insulates me from it because i will literally see something with 90% odds and be like "yeah i've missed that play rough before" and not take the risk

Seems important that black and Hispanic participants were more competitive but also more financially risk-averse than whites. What a surprise that our system rewards financial risk-taking far above actual competitive effort.

High risk-free Treasury yields increase the discount rate on future earnings, putting structural pressure on equity valuations while offering institutional capital competitive fixed-income yields without credit risk. Classic Trumps economy.

A special election for Stefanik's seat is a risk for the GOP.

Is it likely we win it? Probably not—but it's a competitive enough district (R+9) that in certain environment and w/ the right candidate it's doable.

It's happened plenty of times in the past. Not the kind of risk I would have taken.

I try to be sensitive to people’s risk tolerance, particularly when I’m a guest. So I don’t jump feet first into, “well, competitive authoritarianism” or “fascism” or even “state violence”. Instead I stick to concrete examples. But even that goes off like a bomb.

Friends? Family? No. This year I'm thankful for all the entrepreneurs who have taken the risk necessary to grow in a competitive market

Costco’s big thing isn’t that it is better at managing ethics to reduce risk (even though it is!) or that it shows that you can be ethical and still make enough profits (which is still a tradeoff mindset): it’s that it’s ethics give it a competitive advantage and enable it to make _more_ profit

this is very bad but it also runs a real risk of backfiring in a wave election year

really serious gerrymanders often have a bunch of pretty safe seats, not total lock seats, in order to maximize gains

when there’s a massive swing more of those end up competitive

Years ago I was involved in a report on ethics of cognition enhancing drugs. We used two dimensions;

1. Low risk versus higher risk.
2. Non-competitive versus competitive situations (eg exams)

Alarm bells ring when people feel compelled to take risky drugs to compete.

🧪 The attack on science could have a generational effect. We risk losing a wave of early-career researchers to these cuts. And biomedical science in the US will be less ambitious, less competitive & lead to fewer breakthroughs. So much is at stake. My latest for @opinion.bloomberg.com (🎁 link):
NIH Cuts Create a Lost Generation of Scientists
Trump administration attacks on the National Institutes of Health mean biomedical research will become less ambitious, less competitive and result in fewer breakthroughs.

In the context of sexual violence, we know trauma and institutional betrayal is one of the best predictors of college women’s grades.

Students in the throes of trauma have lower GPAs and a higher risk of dropping out. They’re also less likely to graduate from competitive majors like STEM.

Why do whales and elephants have much lower rates of cancer than expected?
"Species with a lower cancer prevalence and mortality
risk are those with a higher presence of cooperative and caring habits, while the opposite is found....:"

Coevolution of cooperative lifestyles and reduced cancer prevalence in mammals
While cooperative mammals evolve reducing cancer prevalence, oncogenes can be maintained by selection in competitive species.

working at a company with a highly competitive culture and one thing i noticed right away is that it makes people way too risk averse to the point where no one wants to take ownership for important low visibility, high stake tasks, which is frustrating when you need to get shit done

Don't be surprised if Republicans in competitive 2026 races start to distance themselves from him. His personality cult offers them no advantage, and considerable risk. He's a lame duck, dead weight, and his time in public will end sooner than you think.
