Decompression (or should I say compression) after a hard day at work

🗜️⚡ If you use gzip/gunzip a lot in your pipelines, switch to the faster"libdeflate" versions instead! They use modern CPU capabilities to achieve a 2-3x speedup.

libdeflate is in conda, and "libdeflate-gzip" and "libdeflate-gunzip" are drop-in replacements. #unix

Such a great idea. Now I can finally let my brain forget the many different tools and flags for working with disparate compression formats.

TIL ouch, a tar replacement written in Rust. `ouch decompress` and `ouch compress`. the commands say what they do and just work based on the file extension

The fact that DLSS5 halves the FPS in-game going by the leaks *for those visuals* is actually insane

I actually can't believe they're going through with it instead of just using neural compression/decompression for assets.

Probably further compression, the switch 2 has hardware decompression block that can decompress game data at runtime.

Every finite sequence can be produced by multiple finite sequences of instructions. Aren't infinities great?

This keeps coming back to reversing entropy and magical compression / decompression algorithms

There's something fitting about breaking the scrapers with what amounts to a decompression attack, after so much AI has been built on the premise that compression is intelligence
Technically, the "HTML Bomb" is just a 10 Mb file of nothing but 10 million H characters, that is gzipped. It's very redundant, so it compresses nicely. There's a robots.txt that says "don't load this file", so obedient spiders won't get in trouble when they load the file and try to decompress it.

For anyone new to #DuckDB (like myself), here’s a great blog post from 2022 on how they utilize compression algorithms:

Lightweight Compression in DuckDB
DuckDB supports efficient lightweight compression that is automatically used to keep data size down without incurring high costs for compression and decompression.

Meta Releases OpenZL 0.3 With Decompression Speed 144% Faster Than Zstd
Just shy of one year ago Meta announced OpenZL as a format-ware compression framework focused on delivering both high compression ratios and high speed compression/decompression

Idle thoughts about compression: most formats need a very "branchy" decompressor with long data-dependency chains.

Even if you parallelize decompression across multiple CPU cores, the utilization of each core is low.

What does a compression format optimised for "wide and deep" cores look like?

We needed a macOS version of the classic Amiga LhA compression/decompression tool, and there was no easily available binary we could use. So, we compiled and released one. Universal, runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Hopefully it can be useful to people out there! github.com/amigavision/...

the fundamental issue with AI has ALWAYS BEEN that it CAN'T do precisely what you intend because prompts are lossy compression you can't control the decompression of. that is what the technology **IS**

now they are rebranding that as "lack of alignment" as if it wasn't present from their inception
If you’re a normal person whose not in tech I wrote an essay explaining where I think we are at with the news of frontier labs deciding to slow down model progress unilaterally together and what it really means for regular humans.

It tries to start from first principles and explain things well.

Imagine:

Decompression suit.

It looks just like compression suit, but nothing happens when you put it on...

However, the moment you go to take it off, you blow up as tho you just took off a high-grade compression suit and all your size is "revealing" itself.

You still weigh the same, tho.
