My computer science professor (an expert in electronic voting) in spring 2001 was just back from testifying in Bush v Gore.
A real generational divide tonight between those of us who were sentient in 2000 and those who weren't as we watch these Florida returns. lol

Economists and computer science folks are still inexplicably wedded to Twitter. But for all other topics that I care about, everyone worth listening to is now on this site.
They were right about Bluesky being a bubble: It’s a high-information bubble. I’m shocked how much more I know about what’s happening than people who still rely on other social media platforms for news. Not having an algorithm between you and direct information is crucial for an objective reality.
They’re saying being on Bluesky gives you an information advantage, which I can confirm since Bluesky is one of the only platforms where I get information anymore

reconsidering my career choices. computer science is draining and thankless. maybe I'll become a self-employed vengeful spirit instead

I teach computer science. It's hard without computers tbh.

Understanding that the same operation can be accomplished through multiple algorithms is actually a great foundation for computer science.

I'm a retired professor of mathematics, computer science, and statistics who has spent the past 16 years deeply involved in election administration. I read this law prof for his insight on legal matters outside my expertise. Now he strayed into *my* wheelhouse. And all I can say is "Amen, Brother."
For today's "One First," I wrote about the California voter roll litigation and the "base rate fallacy"—which, in the election context, manifests as the risk of disenfranchising a significant number of eligible voters in the course of hunting for a proportionally miniscule number of ineligible ones:
260. Elections and the Base Rate Fallacy
The California voter roll litigation is a useful illustration of “election integrity” claims that would exclude far more eligible votes than ineligible ones.

while I'm out here having opinions I think a computer history curriculum would actually be a pretty neat track opposite computer science, and would produce equally ready and able devs but with a very different understanding of the metaphor stack and why things got the way they are

I don't know enough about the mathematics of computer science to comment on this, but I do think that its interesting the speed with which people are hoping to unpack these supposed proofs. Most of all, I just wanted to say that this graphic is WACKY lmao
An AI Breakthrough Has Made Decades of Computer Science Research ‘Irrelevant’
Anthropic and OpenAI say they’ve disproved a key tenet of computer science. Researchers are struggling with the fall but also feel like “overexcited bunnies” as they look at new questions to explore.

Great version of the talk by @irisvanrooij.bsky.social at Sussex Centre for Cognitive Science (COGS) seminars. I always have a chuckle when the massive duck appears! 🦆

Also great hosting by @simoncbowes.bsky.social.
