going through copyedits is sort of like when someone says to you, "you touch your hair a lot, don't you?" and suddenly you're like, "oh man, I do touch my hair a lot, why do I touch my hair so much?" and it's aggressively humbling

The point is: Copyediting isn't theoretical. (Which is why bots can't do it.) One can only copyedit actual sentences.

Some academic publishing contract advice: make sure your contract specifies 1. a qualified human copyeditor will copyedit on the MS; 2. a qualified human proofreader will proofread the MS; 3. that production must have a proper system for version control (!).
