Good news from CoveredCA! They figured out why I couldn't select a plan: when I applied in December, CoveredCA said I was eligible for Medi-Cal and passed control of my account to my county, which determined in February that I was not eligible but didn't pass control of my account back to the state.
Funniest part of all of this is that it costs CA more to subsidize an ACA policy for someone just over the cutoff than it would've been to just give me Medi-Cal. And when my unemployment ends next month, they'll have to give me Medi-Cal anway. I'll make them wish they'd implemented single-payer.
I just got a call back from the county case-worker who said my Medi-Cal application was denied because my unemployment pays $68/mo over the Medi-Cal income cutoff. I'll try to get an ACA policy with Covered CA - but I bet it'll tell me I can't because it's been too long since the qualifying event. 😭

The CoveredCA folks were able to wave a magic wand and release control of my account from the county back to the state which then allowed me to select a plan. I've signed up for a Silver PPO plan starting June 1st, at $8/mo. California is subsidizing it to the tune of $1300/mo. WOOHOO!

I'm paying $1800 a month right now while I'm between jobs on COBRA because it's "cheaper" than what I could get for only healthcare on the private market, and now CoveredCA ACA plans. It's all broken, and my savings will be depleted much sooner because of their inability to govern.

The CoveredCA private agent who I talked to said every time that control of customer accounts has to pass from the county to the state or vice versa, it's always a disaster. That's been exactly my experience, so it's good to know I'm not going crazy there.
