Often instead of being brown it was dyed bright red with the red artificial color common to other goods from crackseed shops (Often Chinese immigrant run dried fruit and nut shops)
I think it became the preferred movie theater snack up until contemporary times

I've tried several varieties of peach ring and I don't know if the recipe has changed or what since the 90s, but they don't taste right, and I noticed no online crackseed/hawaii snack box retailer sells li hing peach rings anymore
they all ended up after experimentation tasting like coriander
