his basic idea about debt, like musk's, is that repaying it is optional, and that if you're a big enough debtor you can just threaten your creditor with default and they'll accept a writedown. he's done this his entire life. he does not understand that his creditor is "every bank."
The only thing Trump knows about treasuries is that famed 80s Wall Street vulgarian John Gutfreund of Salomon Brothers fixed the market and got away with a slap on the wrist. Musk doesn't even know that much. They will make more money for themselves. But they don't understand how anything works.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: Unbound is, in fact, in administration, but has not completed winding up. There is an administrator’s proposal that is seeking creditor input — AUTHORS, THAT IS YOU.
UPDATE: this may in fact be how it works, or how it could have worked if Unbound/Boundless had been slightly less sketchy about it
Preeetty sure this isn’t how it works.

HMRC is an unsecured creditor for corporation and capital gains tax.

It recovers little from bankrupt businesses. Phoenixing also robs the public purse.

HMRC wrote-off £12.8bn in 2025-26.

Changes to law and HMRC creditor status can raise billions for the public purse.
Here’s how the chancellor can raise the billions needed to improve the quality of life of millions

China is Venezuela’s largest creditor, having financed infrastructure in exchange for oil. If U.S. control cuts China off from that oil, the geopolitical fallout would be severe. Some analysts warn this could escalate fast raising risks of great-power conflict and democratic backsliding at home.
