Ask former fans of Anne Rice how well fanfic is protected under copyright law. She went on the warpath against people who wrote Lestat/Louis slash fics and nuked an entire newsgroup in the process - catching other non-slash writers in the crossfire.
I see there's someone suggesting people caught up in the AO3 takedown register the copyrights on their fanfic to protect it from scraping, etc, and, oh, boy, is this really not a great idea. I assure you that Disney, et al will not take kindly to that. "But they have to find out!" THEY WILL FIND OUT

I think a lot of it was in the timing. R170 went into production in '96. Crossfire in 2003. Merc brought out the R171 only a year later in '04, introducing things like rack and pinion steering.
Had the Crossfire arrived closer to the R170 it was based on, it might have had a rosier reception.
