I’m Indigenous and Black.
Native Heritage Month just ended.
It will be Black History Month in February.
Here’s a photo of my Dakelh Dene grandmother and African American grandfather with my great-great-grandfather (my grandma’s father).
I love my Native family and my Black family. 🥰

Carrier syllabics: the writing system residential schools nearly erased

It's an overhaul of Cree syllabics adapted to the #Dakelh language, tripling the number of basic shapes and adding systematic design features.

Apologies missed alt text in first post, essentially different angles of people in a crowd with drummers throughout outside a hospital. Most drums are in Dakelh style with Dakelh - similar to West Coast - artwork of animals of spiritual significance on them

My younger cousin is AMAZING! Art is her only income at the moment and she is looking for new projects to deepen her experience. We are both Dakelh youth from Stellat’en.

Check out this map of Turtle Island circa 16th century.

If you look at the topmost left corner you’ll see my peoples territories, the Dakelh.

In my culture, Dakelh people could decide to live as a man or woman regardless of their gender assigned at birth. They were not judged for it. Queer Natives were highly revered so much that they could become a medicine man/ woman.

I am Dakelh being the closest English pronunciation. "Lh" is an unusual syllable (weird pronunciation/sound made) in my native language. The translation in English, "people who travel by canoe". Ne, means people. Dakelh is just a shorter term. The English name to my nation/tribe is Carrier Nation, within Canada (Interior BC). The meaning behind Carrier, is cause we lived in pits, like the Burrowing Owls.

I get to learn my Dakelh language this year. I put that on my vision board for 2025. I'm getting enrolled into one of my people's first University courses for the language. I'm just so happy. 🥹

There is a large hill at the centre of town that is known to the Dakelh people as a large beaver dam. According to the story, there was a woman whose husband was away hunting. To keep herself busy,
