#dancefly
A macro photo of a dance fly perched along a slender green blade of grass. The insect is shown in side profile, revealing its elongated, dark body and slightly translucent wings folded neatly along its back. Its most striking features are the large, reddish compound eyes and the forward-pointing proboscis, giving it a poised, almost alert appearance. The fly grips the grass with thin, delicate legs, while the blade itself curves gently across the frame, adding a sense of balance and direction. The background is a smooth, out-of-focus wash of green, creating a soft bokeh effect that isolates the subject and emphasises the fine details of the insect’s texture and form.

This macro photo captures a small black fly—likely a member of the Empididae—clinging upside-down to a narrow blade of grass. Its slender, glossy body tapers toward the abdomen, while its relatively large, rounded compound eyes stand out against the otherwise dark head. The wings are folded neatly along its back, and its long, delicate legs grip the grass with precision. The insect’s posture suggests a moment of stillness, possibly resting or waiting to ambush prey. Dance flies are predatory, often feeding on smaller insects, and are commonly found in grassy or damp habitats. Some species are also known for their unusual mating behaviour, where males present prey items as gifts to females. The blade of grass runs diagonally across the frame, adding a dynamic line to the composition. The background is a smooth, vivid green blur (shallow depth of field), which isolates the subject and gives the image a clean, minimalist feel.
