Day 23 of #InsectAdvent

As the angels spread their wings, so do the flies. Rhamphomyia marginata (Empididae) are found across Europe & unusually for animals, it is the females that form the flirty swarms. Maybe not such angelic behaviour 😉

Another new species for me and the garden list: Empis nigritatrsis (Empididae). A small Dagger Fly (5 mm) that, while supposedly common and relatively easily identified, I seem to have overlooked so far.

Marlin is an amazing suggestion, but it’s a dance fly, most likely in the family Empididae. Great photo!

The dance fly Empis digramma in copula atop a fence post at Millington Pastures in East Yorkshire today. Just one pair out of so, so many at the site...hawthorns especially are crawling with these at the moment. #empididae #diptera #dipteristsforum

Maybe Hilara maura, although the tibia looks a bit too small.

Spring is in the air....

..and the males have gone out and caught a nuptial gift (another fly) to occupy the female whilst they mate!

The family Empididae - the Empids or dagger flies are the most gift-giving of animals.

The main theme of yesterday's little macro walk was seeing Dagger flies (Empididae) either mating or feeding on St. Mark's flies (Bibio marci) - or doing both at the same time as it happens...
