The first time I did that was by typing code with a gamepad on my Playstation One, in DarkBASIC. 🧓

DarkBASIC is unlocking a core memory holy shit
I was too young to actually understand it or make any progress but it set me up for later when I took a computer science course in high school, learned a little C++, got a book about DirectX from the library, and finally rendered my first triangle

nope it’s an entire game engine built with darkBasic. Which is just an API for Basic lol

I've never made a visual novel but I've played a few and messed around with making text adventures, arcade games and platformers. Would love to give it a go!

I also remember saving up money for DarkBASIC, to try to make games, but it had barely any tutorials for it, so I never went anywhere with it, also I couldn't draw at that time at all.

Oh right. Godot is that new company program for games, isn't it? The only program that I know of for games was Gamemaker.

When I was in college in the late 00s/early 10s, Java was the language the curriculum was built around. I excelled at it because I had before college done DarkBASIC on my own and had already moved on to Java on my own from that experience. Those truly brand new struggled in that class.
