What was attractive about the first part was the balance, the interplay even, between the darkgrim and the lighthearted absurd -- something shared with Vonnegut, Pratchett, and Cabell.

This is Darkgrim, totally different!! ;-)
Honestly a part of the motivation of this was to take some of the aesthetics of grimdark and subvert them to a more vibrant gonzo sci-fantasy setting.

My FIL watching 2024 movie trailers... is upset that everything was grimdark darkgrim heavy shit. Even the comedies were mostly fluff, like a teenage girl making a movie about making movies, or a well-known celebrity making a movie about making movies (and police corruption)

The art and background is great, but that setting is grim, dark, grimdark and darkgrim. But at least the elves have quality ears.
